WELL DONE MPC GAMES TEAM 01/09

The Massey Pony Club Mounted Games teams produced some flashy performances

>
> Steady nerves and good riding during the Saturday and Sunday morning

This is a huge achievement to be selected as one of the 4 riders from New Zealand so well done Kyle - I'm sure you will represent Henderson Valley Pony Club, West Auckland District, Waitemata Rodney Area and New Zealand well.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wow what an exhilarating experience this last week has been. I was lucky
enough to travel down as the team cook to Nelson for this years Pony Club
Champs. We carried in the truck down the Dressage cup that our team had won
last year we had high hopes and an inner belief that this could be Waitemata
Rodneys year. Our team was
Manager Maree Lilo MASSEY
Coach Mary Dawkins Coatesville

A1's (This is the 17 and over section of the competition)

Sarah Lauder Huapai
Chanelle Campbell Captain ( She was one of our lovely camp instructors
and this was her 5th PC champs) Coatesville
Debbie Mansell ( Some of you may remember her from Massey High School)
Huapai

DC's (16 and under)
Nicola Kelsey Warkworth
Ginny Thompson MASSEY
Courtney Davidson Huapai

Our support team who were all amazing Thanks Jess and Julie Davy, Kelly
Jaimeson, Hazel, Brian and Andrew Thompson, Debbie and Brenda Kelly, Rowie
and Kyle Caulder and many more parents and friends who flew or drove down to
support the team.

The truck ride down posed a few problems when Sarah's horse Tubby decided
that 2.00 in the morning was far to early and refused to go onto the truck,
so with a boat to catch the time was ticking and finally 45 minutes later
than timetabled they were on their way. They got preferential treatment when
they got to the boat, driving straight on (and only having held it up for 20
minutes) this of course delayed the entire days sailings so we had already
put our competitors onto the back foot.

The horses arrived in Nelson at about 12 and we soon followed, we found our
Motels and dumped our huge amounts of luggage so we could go to the paddocks
where Uncle Ron and Mary were waiting for us. After getting lost in Richmond
and searching for the local subway we made it out to save a starving Mary
and Ron and pick up even more luggage and settle the horses in.

Everything was looking good the horses had traveled exceptionally well and
were now taped into their individual paddocks. The fence was turned on and
we were off home.

Next morning we were up reasonably early (I thought it was really early but
I knew nothing about early) the horses were fed and then we took the girls
and horses off to an amazing equestrian park called Rough Island. Here the
girls could stretch the horses legs have a practice through the dressage
tests and have a little jump. They seemed to have all traveled well and were
quite relaxed. The weather was beautiful with a strong cold southerly
blowing, all the signs were good. The horses were warming up well and
looking good. So back to the paddocks and a quick trip up to check out where
the competition was and home,

The following day was another early morning we dropped the girls off to ride
and I dropped Mary and Maree up to the manager and coaches official zcountry
walk. Picked up the girls and had to then find Mary and Maree in the local
pub it was then off to the reception. There were thirteen teams competing and
everyone was here, trainers, coaches parents, sponsors and many more. A few
telephones from Waitemata Rodney crowed and rang throughout the very formal
speeches causing many of us to have red faces we moved on to the skits. This
was an opportunity for the teams to get up and introduce themselves. With
huge amounts of humor and a few embarrassing moments as the skits were
performed. Some were good some were great and others were hohum. Our girls
were last and were obviously not here to win the best skit award. it was
short and to the point. Then it was a luncheon and finally what we had all
come here for, we were off to walk the course!

WOW it was everything you could want in a Champs course presented
magnificently and with trees and picnic tables set with wine bottles, a
poppy jump surrounded by rosemary the herb that stimulates memory and boats
and so many more. It was a nice course friendly and inviting but technical
and demanding as well. As we walked it together as a team we had many
discussions on the best way to jump fences and how to walk the striding.
There was in the A1 section a particularly challenging bounce with a 5 point
penalty option. This was going to be a tricky fence and was the one designed
to do a great deal of weeding. Our girls looked at it hard and then we moved
on. With much to think about and several combinations walked more than once
it was home to plan the next day.

Waitemata Rodney are like a well oiled machine at Champs and everything is
planned and timetabled from plaiting to warm up to an excellent buddy
system. These girls I realized were not here to party they were on a serious
campaign the would have made Winston Churchill afraid.

Our wakeup call was given by Sarah who was to ride first 5.30 , I must admit
to a shudder as this time was mentioned but whatever the team requested we
were there to support. So an early night then the scary alarm clock sounded
all to soon. 5 of the team appeared for a quick breakfast and then we drove
past the girls motel room and rolled number 6 into the van. In the dark and
the cold we arrived at the paddock, and woke the horses with breakfast, then
onto the truck, by now Tubby was running on with Sarah and loading was
becoming a breeze. We were the 2nd team to arrive and our campaign plan was
put into motion. The ramps were dropped the horses tied up, the truck was
unpacked and decorated with a banner and photo board describing our team and
their achievements. Saddles were hung up the boxes were sorted into a DC and
A1 compartment and the day began. Sarah and her buddy plaited, Channel rode
a little warm up and everyone was busy working.

Our little horse shoe area filled with supporters and Ginny was going to be
next to ride so was also getting ready by now.

Sarah rode 6th we all walked over the road to watch, after ensuring that our
Area was spotless and not a hair on even the horses heads was out of place.
Tubby looked magnificent and we watched him warm up and were impressed with
his style. He went in and performed what looked like to us a great test
yeah, Ginny was next and also did a really solid accurate test it looked
great, Debbie was our next rider and with a bit of time in between went to
check out he score board, Yeah Sarah was lying 1st , of course no pressure
on the rest of the team at this point (yeah Right) Debbie put in a very good
test and we were most impressed it was another winning test we thought.
Courtney for the Dc's was next again another perfect test, all going well so
far, our horses were all calm and performing like clockwork our positions
were Sarah still 1st Debbie now 2nd Ginny was now lying 4th = and we were
beginning to think it was possible. Channel next and yes it was a great test
to Our three A1 riders were now lying 1st 2nd and 4th, Nicola was the 2nd to
last test of the day and all the horses were gone but Scout the pony on the
team just did the business. So we were the overnight leaders with a 20 point
margin! Nicola was lying 3rd overnight with Debbie still 2nd and sarah still
1st.

NO PRESSURE

Ginny was riding 1st next day and was to give the wake up call! She asked
for a 5.00 time groaning at the thought we all agreed and off to bed we
went. No thoughts of revenge for whoever had fruit bombed our car in the
morning it was to be an 8.30 bedtime. Revenge is a dish best served cold and
this would keep.

Up even earlier and it was cold and pitch black, the team again flew into
action and it was to be the exciting day xcountry and show jumping.

We were the 1st team to arrive today and again without a hair out of place
our team zoomed into the hive of activity. Their team spirit and ability to
work together and support each other was amazing. Ginny shot off to check
out a few of the trickier combinations and the other team members began
helping her get Johnny ready. The day started and before Ginny riding 13 we
could see that it was a testing course and there were a few sticky places.
The coal wagons which was a huge drop that led on to an offset chevron was
causing a few upsets as was a right-angled brush complex, the bounce was
also out to get a few and the water was always a little sticky.

Johnny ambled into the start box looking like he was already regretting the
5.00 wake up call and then he was off at this beautiful rolling canter. He
rode it magnificently and we watched in awe as he cruised over jump after
jump onwards to the end. After the coal shuttle drop he was on a mission and
his speed was climbing for even Johnny WOW he was impressive and safely home
1 clear, ( We needed 4 to keep our position at the top) Courtney was next
and beautiful Buddy just got on with the business and with a worrying moment
at the bounce when she caught up another rider who was having problems, she
two got home safely , two clear! Nicolas turn and she was on a mission. man
that little pony can jump he did not touch a fence and he was flying Nicola
was running on adrenalin and she ate the course up THREE CLEAR

Now the A1's were to start. we needed to guarantee one more clear. Poor
Sarah sitting on 1st place was asked to make the team sacrifice and take the
option at the bounce giving up her individual 1st place yet giving the team
an easy 4th counting round. Thanks to Sarah our 1st place remained and she
took one for the team, so we had our 4 rounds and held our lead. Debbie had
an excellent round and Channel retired as Tommy was not on form.

So off to the trot up and a tense time again as we waited for our team to
be declared fit for the show jumping.

Show jumping started and the course was tricky one inside out change of rein
for the Dc's meant allot of rails flying, Ginny's turn came and Johnny did
the perfect slow round we so often see with him, all our breaths were held
as he carefully lifted his tootsies over every rail yeah one clear, Courtney
did an excellent job on Gizzy and took one rail we now had 4 to spare,
Nicola on Scout did a nippy perfect round as careful as can be.

Now it was the A1's turn and our team were well and truly in 1st place we
had a 5 rail lead and Sarah to jump for the team, if Debbie went clear we
would also have a spare score we could use depending on the jumping we were
quietly confident but could not jinx it so we waited. Sarah was anxiously
waiting for the Cambridge rider who had taken the lead to go, before
beginning the warm up as this was jumped in order of team placing the
Waitemata Rodney girls were jumping last. We all watched holding our
breathes knowing we had asked Sarah to sacrifice her 1st place to guarantee
a good chance for the team. Jump no 1 and the 2 clear number 3 the rail, and
a breath was taken Sarah now lay in 1st place.

The rest of the competition was hazy and there seemed to be many rails no
stops though and all the horses were trying there hardest after a tiring X
country round. Finally Sarah's turn. Again breaths were held, she had 5
rails up her sleeve and we would still be the winners.. She jumped a perfect
round and we were there a Waitemata Rodney 1st place at Champs~!!!!! To top
it off Debbie continued on Gizzy and jumped a beautiful round as well so we
had done it.

CONGRATULATIONS TO WAITEMATA RODNEY'S WINING TEAM
1st in Dressage
1st overall
1st A1 Individual
1st DC Team
Individual placing for Nicola Kelsey 2nd and Ginny Thompson 4th

Then to top it all off we also won the Horse management cup as well! This
was an amazing cop and just prooves that these cups are as fairly marked as
any other part of the competition. We knew we should have but doubted we
would.
INCREDIBLE AND WONDEFUL REWARD FOR A TEAM WHO WORKED SO HARD!

We won the Dressage last year, 10 years ago we one the overall cup and 31
years ago we won both WOW!

It was a wonderful well deserved win and the entire team worked so well
together helping and supporting each other.

We have decided that Nelson was our lucky place as coincidently this was
also the place we last had this very successful win.

So the team could finally let there hair down and did so at the after
competition party.

It was the most amazing honour to have been there and to have felt included
in this team of young rising stars. The cups are huge and well worth making
the effort to see.

This is the dream of pony club success and I just want to congratulate Maree
and Ginny for representing Massey in the winning Dream Team.
